Once you find the used car you are interested in, there are some key points you need to be aware of before buying.

ALWAYS CHECK THE TITLE:
?Make sure the car is legit: The 17 digit VIN#'s on the door, hood, engine, dashboard do not all match exactly, then you may have a rebuilt or stolen car.

ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION:
Of course, you should always have your mechanic check out the car on a lift


LOOK FOR HIDDEN PROBLEMS:
? It's important to run a CARFAX or the Experian AutoCheck Vehicle History Reports on the car's VIN# prior to purchasing
? When checking the title if it still shows a lien holder with no "Lien Satisfied" stamp on it. It means they still owe the bank


and that will be a huge problem for you.

? The AutoCheck report shows evidence of odometer rollback or title branded as junk, flooded, stolen, etc

When Buying from a dealer- here are some things to check before you buy.
"It is a good idea to find out what the dealer had to do to get the car ready for sale," adds Gabriele. "You should also ask what can a dealer throw in to make it a better deal: New floor mats? New tires? You may get more than you expected."


Consumers should also see if they can you get a better price if you pay cash instead of finance? Also, alwats ask what is the dealerships exchange policy on a used car. Most legit dealerships will offer an exchange policy within a certain number of days,


The most important thing is the test drive," Says Gabriele. "That is where you will know if this is the right car. You tshould ake the car for at least 30 minutes o see if it is what you want and long enough to have your mechanic check it."

It is always important to find out where the car was purchased
from. You want to make sure it is not a flood car- so be careful of
cars that came from New Orleans. See if the dealer has the maintanience records for the car. Many people bring those when they trade in a car. It will give you peace of mine,


" No two used cars are exactly the same- mileage and wear will
make them all different," says Gabriele. "But you can often find very close
comparables- and go to the dealer you want to buy from with
someone else's better deal. The internet has made that possible."

The Mysteries Of Leasing a Car

When the American economy started to falter, the practice of auto leasing saw a boon, mainly because it allowed many consumers to get more car at a lower monthly payment. In many cases, leasing is a wise choice and can save the consumer considerable money, but for others, it can be a costly mistake.


Now,a successful car dealer has offered to lend his insight and dis-spell many of the mysteries tied to the practice of auto leasing. "What are the differences between leasing a car and buying one?," asks John Gabriele, President and CEO of Marina Auto Group in Rochester, NY. "In many ways it appears to be similar to deciding whether to buy a house or rent an apartment or home. With rent, you don't have to deal with a lot of the costs of owning a home, taxes and maintenance costs, but it can sometimes cost more in the long run and there is no equity. It is a similar comparison with leasing."


Gabriele points out that car buyers usually want to have the equity of the vehicle at the end of their loan so they have something to trade on the next one.. With leasing,however, the consumer only pays for the period you want to be in the vehicle, not for the value of the entire vehicle.

"There are some misconceptions- it is not like renting," admits Gabriele. "The lesee is still responsible for scheduled maintenance (unlike when you rent a home) but most leases
are around 36 months so major repairs are usually not an issue."


The advantages are manyfold: By not having equity in the vehicle, the lesee is often able to get away with a smaller downpayment (or no downpayment) and usually a lower monthly payment than buying.

Leasing can make sense for drivers who always want to be in a newer vehicle and don't mind always having a payment, alternatively, if you want to eventually have a payment-free mode of transportation and are OK with staying in the same vehicle for an extended period of time, then you should focus on an outright purchase.


Says Gabriele: "With purchasing there is often a downpayment


buy pays the fees and taxes separately, or rolls them into the bank loan. he rate is determined by the bank or lending institution, and the payments usually start 30 days after you take the vehicle home, and goes toward the entire cost of the car."

"With leasing you often have the option of not making any downpayment and your payment applies only to the part of the vehicles cost while you are in that car. Sales tax is based on the monthly lease payment and not the entire cost of the car," he adds, "and that is a BIG reason to look at leasing."



But there can be additional fees with leasing, such as a security deposit that is returned at the end of the lease high mileage situations usually do not make sense with a lease. Most leases are limited to 12,000 miles per year. The cost per mile after that can be as much as 20ç per mile, thereafter. However, if you know you will be driving more miles than allotted, you can purchase additional miles for less, in advance


Another advantage is leasing can be a great way to establish credit. If you are a first time buyer or have bad credit, sometimes auto leasing is the only way a dealer can get you financing.

"With leasing you can often get more Car, more often," says Gabriele. "With lower payments, car leases allow you to get more car for your money and drive a new car every three years. You wiill have fewer maintenance headaches. If your lease term coincides with the manufacturer's warranty, major repairs are covered by the warranty."


USED car leases do exist, they are very rare. "In almost every case with a used vehicle, purchasing is the better choice," says Gabriele. "Here's why: Most depreciation occurs in the first few years of a car. The value of a used car at the end of a lease is often not enough to make the payment reasonable."
